Scintillata Nee is an extraordinary, experimental volume of verse by young author Cynthia Tenor. While the poems take the reader through the development of a personal relationship, the text is expressed in highly unusual terms: words are often chosen for their sound and/or etymology and rather than for their more obvious meaning. Strange and imaginative coinings of new words are dotted throughout the text, while many of the poems also include deliberate...

I floated to the West
I floated through the water
Through the air and the land
Then I became the raindrops in the sand
I floated in the night
Weightless. No effort was made by me
And all the stars were smiling
In the morning I arrived
From the Middle Kingdom far away
I floated
I floated to the West
That's what they say

Peoples and nations, like exasperated neighbours stuck in a lift, are looking for explanations and where to place the blame (as ever), but also for a way out and salvation.
How could even a crumb of private life be saved?
This question bothers me, as I find it to be existential for all the arts.
For years now it has not been easy with that expanding intrusion into all spheres of privacy, made worse by the pandemic, in a crowded and even more inconvenient...

This is a collection of saviours
Without whom I would not have survived
It tells tales
About heartbreak so severe one wasn't sure one would survive it
And of losing, and therefore feeling lost
Losing, and therefore feeling empowered
It's about wanting to get better, but not sure if one ever can.
This collection will prove that it is possible
But that it is okay to feel like it isn't
I know because
When the flood came
The words taught me...

moon on a lone tent

my verses may serve
A delight in the limitless freedom of writing poetry and a lasting fondness of life are the substratum of this late collection.
It's a lifelike chaos.
It is of love's joy and pain, of ambiguities between nature and society, attachment and independence, trust and despair.
It has follies, gloom, rhymes, free verses, loose and traditional shapes, lilts and cadences, and no capital...

Anxiety throughout your teenage years fills your head with "a billion voices". All of these thoughts make you question what you and the world around you are about, to the point where you feel you are going totally insane. This is my experience, for you to enjoy, meditate and maybe have a good laugh at me and yourself as well, remembering what you also went through during those crazy times.

How come Shakespeare keeps challenging and fascinating us? Why do we keep watching his plays and reading his poetry? Maybe because he knows us so well. His irresistible, playful comedies, full of love and joy, show us at our happiest moments, his tragedies show us the darkest dungeons of the human mind, and his romances have this strong and wonderful tone of reconciliation and forgiveness, that we all need now and then, and his poetry lends words...

'When you have a mental illness, you are medicated for it. Most medications have side effects, some of them strange. When I was first medicated, a very odd side effect happened. I suddenly started writing poetry out of the blue. I had never written any before and didn't even like poetry!
Most of my poetry is about what it is like to have a mental illness and how we cope with it day by day. Now over 900 poems later, I am still writing.'

The author being a keen genealogist, many of these poems resonate with his passion for heritage, some marking major events of the twentieth century, with other poems travelling even further back to previous centuries.
The author also touches on the inevitable passing of time and his own ageing, which he addresses with some mischief and fun. While there is always a presence of nostalgia, sometimes sadness, White balances this with poems about the joy...

'I have the misfortune of having a date with you daily, Though you lessen your grip every now and then. I am still shackled to your chains. I am not the master of my own time. You dictate the pace of my day and how I spend my time.' (From the poem 'Shackles') Fresh, accessible and heartfelt, the poems in Renée Walter's collection Echoes from the Cellar Within deal with many different aspects of life, such as love, loss and joy.

Angels look down from on high. Watching carefully over those they are appointed to protect, they silently lead us through times of trial, shaping us into the people we are destined to be. Their words soothe, comfort, guide and cajole us.
Elephants store the memories of a lifetime, wordlessly documenting all that has been, never forgetting the smallest detail or emotion. They are the great record-keepers, remembering everything exactly as it was....

John Butler-Hopkins' For the Love of Poetry opens, appropriately enough, with a sequence of poems about romantic love in all its aspects: the dizzying ecstasies of infatuation and first love, then the brutal lessons of rejection and betrayal, and finally the discovery of a soul mate and the development of a true, long-term relationship.
By contrast, the book's second half is concerned with the tragedy of young men going to fight in the First World...

Description
In this first collection of his poetry, David M Garnett observes the forms of nature in their environments. Many of the poems become hymns to creatures from recently receding landscapes. He depicts relationships not only among people but also with animate and inanimate objects. This also makes the collection confessional in the characteristic British mode.
Roads Stretch is very much a poetry of journey — physical, emotional and mystical.
